Phuket vs Koh Samui —
The Complete 2026 Comparison
Opposite coasts, different seasons. Beaches, hotels, families, nightlife, day trips, flights and prices compared — so you can pick the right island for the right time of year.
"Phuket or Koh Samui?" is one of the classic Thailand dilemmas — and unlike some island comparisons, this one has a genuinely important twist: the two sit on opposite coasts of the country, with different seas and different rainy seasons. That single fact can make one island the obvious choice depending on when you travel. Beyond the weather, they also have quite distinct personalities — Phuket bigger, busier and more varied; Koh Samui smaller, greener and more boutique.
This guide compares the two honestly across everything that matters — the coasts and weather, beaches, hotels, families, couples, nightlife, day trips, flights and price — so you can choose the island that fits your trip. We're a local operator on the Andaman side, so we'll be straight with you about where each island genuinely shines.

1. Quick Overview: Phuket & Koh Samui
Phuket — Big, Busy and Full of Variety
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, on the Andaman (west) coast. It has a major international airport with cheap and plentiful flights, more than 40 beaches, hotels in every category, world-famous nightlife in Patong, and the country's richest spread of day trips. Phuket is the destination for travellers who want maximum choice and easy access to iconic islands like Phi Phi.

Koh Samui — Smaller, Greener, More Boutique
Koh Samui is Thailand's second-biggest island, on the Gulf (east) coast. It's noticeably smaller and more compact than Phuket, ringed by palm-fringed beaches and known for its boutique resorts, wellness retreats and relaxed, tropical feel. Its main beaches are the lively Chaweng, the slightly calmer Lamai, the charming Bophut (Fisherman's Village), and the quiet Maenam Und Choeng Mon. Samui is also the gateway to Koh Phangan (the Full Moon Party) and Koh Tao (world-class diving).

2. The Coasts & Weather — The Most Important Difference
Because Phuket and Koh Samui sit on opposite coasts, they have different weather seasons — and this is often the single biggest factor in choosing between them.
Phuket (Andaman / west coast): the dry high season runs roughly from November bis April, with reliable sunshine and calm seas ideal for boat trips and snorkelling. The rainy southwest monsoon runs roughly May to October, with the wettest weather typically around September.
Koh Samui (Gulf / east coast): the pattern is different. Samui is often at its driest and sunniest from around February to April and again June to August. Its wettest period comes later in the year, with November usually the rainiest month as the northeast monsoon arrives.

Roughly speaking: for a November–December beach holiday, Phuket is usually the safer bet (Samui can be at its wettest). In the May–September window, when Phuket is in its rainy season, Koh Samui can offer more reliable sunshine — June to August is often lovely on the Gulf. Around February–April, both islands are generally excellent. Weather varies year to year, so treat this as a guide, not a guarantee — and message us for an honest read on your dates.
3. Phuket vs Koh Samui Beaches — Which Are Better?
Phuket Beaches: Variety and Choice
Phuket's strength is variety — over 40 beaches ranging from the upscale calm of Bang Tao Und Surin Inseln, to the family favourites Kata Und Kata Noi, the buzz of Patong, and quiet corners like Ya Nui Und Freedom Beach. There's a beach for every mood, all well serviced, though the busiest ones fill up in peak season.
Koh Samui Beaches: Palm-Fringed and Compact
Koh Samui's beaches have a classic tropical look — soft sand backed by leaning coconut palms. Chaweng is the longest and liveliest, with the best swimming and the most restaurants and bars. Lamai is a slightly calmer version of Chaweng. Choeng Mon Und Bophut are quieter and family-friendly, and Maenam is the most laid-back of all. Because Samui is smaller, it's easy to sample several beaches in a single stay. Some Gulf beaches can be shallow or seasonally seaweedy at certain times, so it's worth choosing your beach area with a little care.

4. Hotels in Phuket vs Koh Samui — Where to Stay?
Phuket Hotels: The Widest Range in Thailand
Phuket has the broadest accommodation choice in the country — from hostels and budget guesthouses to some of Asia's finest luxury resorts, across every beach and price point. If you want maximum choice and the ability to match a hotel precisely to your budget, Phuket is hard to beat.
Koh Samui Hotels: Boutique & Wellness Strength
Koh Samui punches well above its size on style. It's especially strong on boutique resorts, luxury pool villas and wellness retreats — the island is a well-known destination for spa and detox holidays. From smart beach resorts in Chaweng and Choeng Mon to hillside villas with sea views and the boutique charm of Bophut, Samui's accommodation feels a touch more design-led and intimate than Phuket's on average, if with less sheer range.

5. Phuket or Koh Samui for Families?
Both islands work well for families. Phuket has more large family resorts with kids' clubs, more water parks and indoor attractions, and the most rainy-day backup options — practical strengths for families who want plenty on tap. Koh Samui is smaller and easier to get around, with gentle, pretty beaches like Choeng Mon Und Bophut and a relaxed pace that many families find less overwhelming than Phuket. Samui has fewer big indoor attractions, so it leans on its beaches and calm rather than theme-park-style variety.

6. Phuket or Koh Samui for Couples, Honeymoon & Wellness?
This is where Koh Samui makes its strongest case. The island's abundance of private pool villas, boutique resorts and dedicated wellness and spa retreats, combined with its intimate scale and palm-fringed beaches, gives it a naturally romantic, restorative feel — it's a favourite for honeymoons and couples' escapes. Phuket competes with a wider selection of luxury resorts, more fine-dining and beach clubs, and more variety in the evenings. In short: Koh Samui for intimate, wellness-focused romance; Phuket for romance with more variety and choice.

7. Nightlife & Entertainment: Phuket vs Koh Samui
Phuket has the bigger, more varied nightlife. Patong's Bangla Road is Thailand's most famous party strip, and beyond it Phuket has a huge beach-club scene, cabaret shows, night markets and international dining. Koh Samui's nightlife is centred on Chaweng, with a lively strip of bars and clubs, plus the more relaxed Bophut and beach-bar scene elsewhere. Samui's trump card is proximity: it's the launch point for Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party, the most famous beach party on earth, just a short boat ride away. So Phuket wins on sheer scale and variety, while Samui offers a more contained scene plus the Full Moon Party next door.

8. Day Trips & Activities: What Can You Do from Each?
Tagesausflüge ab Phuket: Phi Phi Inseln, James Bond Insel und mehr
Phuket is one of Thailand's best bases for day trips. The Phi Phi Inseln are the star attraction, while James-Bond-Insel und Phang-Nga-Bucht offer the country's most dramatic bay scenery — explored by sea canoe on our Twilight Sea Canoe tour. You can also reach Krabi's 4 Islands and spend time with elephants at our ethical Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. From nearby Khao Lak, the world-class Similan-Inseln are within reach.

Day Trips from Koh Samui
Koh Samui's headline excursion is the Ang Thong Marine Park — a stunning archipelago of 42 islands with an emerald lagoon and viewpoints, reached by boat or kayak. The island is also the springboard to Koh Phangan (beaches and the Full Moon Party) and Koh Tao, one of the world's most popular and affordable places to learn to dive. On land, Samui's own sights include the Big Buddha, waterfalls and the Fisherman's Village night market at Bophut.

Tour ansehen →9. Getting There & Flights
This is a real practical difference. Phuket International Airport is one of Thailand's busiest, with many direct international flights and budget domestic carriers — so getting there is usually cheaper and more flexible. Koh Samui Airport is a small, boutique airport served mainly by a single premium carrier, which keeps flight prices higher; the budget-friendly alternative is to fly to Surat Thani on the mainland and continue by bus-and-ferry, which is cheaper but takes longer. If low flight costs and easy connections matter to you, Phuket has the clear advantage.
10. Phuket vs Koh Samui: Which is More Affordable?
Overall, Phuket tends to be the more budget-flexible island — mostly because flights are cheaper and it has a wider spread of budget hotels, hostels and cheap eats. Koh Samui can be excellent value at the boutique and villa level, but the higher cost of getting there (premium flights) and its more curated hotel scene mean day-to-day costs often run a little higher, especially for budget travellers. At the luxury end the two are broadly comparable. If you're watching the budget, Phuket usually stretches further.
11. Phuket or Koh Samui for First-Time Visitors?
Wählen Sie Phuket, wenn Sie…
- Want the widest choice of hotels, beaches and restaurants
- Prefer cheaper, easier flights and more connections
- Want the most famous day trips — Phi Phi, James Bond, Krabi, Phang Nga
- Value big nightlife and beach clubs
- Are travelling around November–December, when the Andaman coast is at its best
- Are on a tighter budget or want maximum variety
Choose Koh Samui if you…
- Want a smaller, greener, more laid-back island feel
- Are drawn to boutique resorts, pool villas or a wellness retreat
- Plan to visit Koh Phangan (Full Moon Party) or dive at Koh Tao
- Are travelling in the May–September window, when the Gulf coast can be sunnier
- Prefer an intimate honeymoon or couples' escape
- Like being able to sample several beaches within a compact island
12. Can You Combine Phuket and Koh Samui?
Two Coasts, One Trip
You can absolutely combine both — just remember they're on opposite coasts, so it means a short flight or a longer overland-and-ferry journey rather than a quick transfer. A popular approach for a two-week trip:
- Phuket first: Andaman beaches, Phi Phi, James Bond Island & Phang Nga Bay, Krabi day trip, nightlife and variety
- Short flight to Koh Samui (via Bangkok or a direct regional hop)
- Koh Samui second: Gulf-coast beaches, Ang Thong Marine Park, a wellness stay, and an optional trip to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao
It's a fantastic way to experience two very different sides of Thailand — but if your time is limited, picking one island (guided by the season) usually makes for a more relaxed holiday. Tell us your dates and we'll help you plan it.

Phuket is the stronger all-rounder: cheaper to reach, more variety, more day trips, bigger nightlife and better value, and it's the natural pick for a November–December Andaman holiday.
