How to Plan Your Khao Lak Day Trips

Before we get into the individual tours, it's worth a quick word on planning — with 15 options in front of you, the obvious question is what to book first and how many trips actually fit into a week.

As a rule of thumb, we'd suggest no more than three or four full-day tours per week if you also want time left for the beach, the pool and simply doing nothing. Most of our day trips pick up between 6:00 and 8:00am and run until late afternoon or early evening — a full day, and one that's worth a slower morning the next day.

A good order for a two-week trip looks something like this: start gently with the Khao Lak Safari or Little Amazon while you settle into the heat and time zone. In the middle of your trip, tackle the bigger highlights like the Similan Islands or James Bond Island, once you're a little more sun-adjusted. Save adrenaline days like ATV or white water rafting for the second half of your stay. And finish with the Twilight Sea Canoe or the Sunset Cruise – Aurora Sea as a calm, romantic send-off.

One thing worth flagging early: the Similan and Surin Islands are only open from 15 October to 15 May — exact opening and closing dates can shift slightly depending on weather and the national park authority. If you're travelling outside that window, focus instead on Khao Sok, the Phang Nga Bay tours, Krabi and our land-based trips — all of these run year-round, and a quick shower rarely derails a day since the weather here tends to clear up again within hours.

On booking: for larger tours — especially with a German-speaking guide — we'd recommend asking at least one to two weeks ahead, more during peak season (December/January). Walk-up bookings work for plenty of our tours too, but you do risk your preferred date or language being full. The easiest way is always a quick message on WhatsApp — we reply fast and are happy to put together a full itinerary for your whole stay.

The Similan Islands are one of our absolute bestsellers — mainly for the powder-white beaches, the iconic Sail Rock viewpoint, and the turquoise, crystal-clear bays. We run two versions of this tour: by speedboat (a bit more thrilling, suited to kids aged 6-7 and up) or by speed catamaran (calmer, fine from around age 2-3, and a much better choice if you get seasick easily).

Honestly: if snorkelling and colourful coral are your main priority, we'd actually point you toward the Surin Islands instead — the coral around the Similan Islands isn't as vibrant as it used to be, and you won't see manta rays here. You will see plenty of fish, though, and there's a good chance of spotting the resident sea turtles. If what you're after is postcard-white beaches, the famous Sail Rock, and some snorkelling on the side, the Similan Islands are exactly right.

Pickup runs between 5:00 and 6:00am, with return to your hotel usually between 4:00 and 4:30pm. A towel is included on the speed catamaran tour — bring your own if you're booking the speedboat.

Best Snorkelling in the Region Moken Culture From age 2-3 (catamaran) / 6-7 (speedboat)

The Surin Islands sit further north than the Similan Islands and are genuinely one of the best snorkelling destinations in Thailand — the reefs here are noticeably healthier and more colourful than at the Similans. The islands are also home to the Moken, the so-called "sea gypsies," who have lived on and with the sea for generations.

Just like at the Similan Islands, we offer two ways to get there: by speedboat (from age 6-7) or by speed catamaran (technically possible from age 2-3, though given the length of the day we'd suggest closer to age 4).

One clarification, since this gets misunderstood a lot: the Surin Islands are not some secret, empty island — don't expect to have the place to yourself. They simply see fewer visitors than the Similan Islands. Our early start helps you get ahead of the bigger groups and enjoy the calmest hours on the reef.

The day takes you by boat first to Chong Kaad Bay for your first snorkel stop, followed by lunch at the national park restaurant. From there, it's on to two more snorkel spots — typically Bon Bay, Tao Bay or Pineapple Bay, depending on conditions.

The Moken encounter is a real highlight here too. This community traditionally spends months at sea and only returns to land during the rainy season — their village on the Surin Islands is one of the last places where you can experience this way of life up close, without it feeling staged for tourists.

Limestone Scenery Boat Trip From age 4 or 6-7, depending on option

Cheow Lan Lake (usually just called "Khao Sok Lake") is one of the most spectacular day trips in the whole region — a turquoise-green reservoir framed by sheer limestone towers older than the Himalayas. You'll cruise the lake by boat, passing the iconic rock formations and a cave, before lunch is served at a local restaurant right on the water, with plenty of time to swim, kayak and unwind.

We run this tour in two versions: combined with a roughly 90-minute jungle trek — for this one we'd recommend a minimum age of 6-7, since the trail gets a bit demanding in places and proper footwear with good grip is a must. Or as a version that swaps the trek for a visit to the Ban Nam Rad Watershed Forest instead — this option already works for kids from age 4. Either way, it's a long day, since the lake sits around a 2-hour drive from Khao Lak each way.

Geographically, Cheow Lan Lake sits in the middle of Khao Sok National Park — one of the oldest rainforests on Earth, older even than the Amazon. The drive itself is part of the experience: the road winds through green hills, rubber plantations and small villages before the sheer limestone walls suddenly open up at the lake.

This trip works particularly well for travellers who've already done an island tour and fancy a contrast from the sea — dense jungle, still water and a completely different soundscape of birdsong and the occasional distant gibbon call.

Classic Canoeing Floating Village Great for families

James Bond Island — made famous by "The Man with the Golden Gun" — is one of the most photographed sights in Phang Nga Bay, and rightly earns its spot on every Khao Lak bucket list. By longtail boat, you'll weave between dramatic limestone karsts and past mangrove forests on the way to the famous rock spire itself.

Along the way, we usually stop at a local Buddhist temple (the exact one can vary depending on the day's route), paddle by canoe through hidden lagoons and caves, and visit Koh Panyee, the floating Muslim fishing village built on stilts in the middle of the bay — lunch is served right in the village. It's a day full of contrasts: spectacular nature, lived-in culture, and no shortage of photo stops.

The longtail boat itself is part of the experience — these narrow traditional boats with their long propeller arms are a familiar sight along every stretch of Thai coastline, and they put you much closer to the water and the scenery than a larger speedboat ever could.

Koh Panyee deserves a mention of its own: the entire village stands on stilts over the water, with narrow wooden walkways instead of streets, a floating mosque, and even a floating football pitch the local kids built from scrap wood back in the 1980s. Most residents still make their living from fishing, with tourism a more recent addition — a visit here feels genuinely lived-in rather than staged.

Island Hopping Photo Spot Small Groups Great for families

The Krabi region sees far fewer visitors from Khao Lak than the Similan Islands or Phang Nga, which makes it a real find for anyone after something different. This tour runs in deliberately small, exclusive groups — by longtail boat, you'll reach the striking Hong Island and its famous viewpoint, continue to the Instagram-friendly Lao Lading photo spot, and finish up relaxing on the gorgeous, quiet beach at Laem Haad on Koh Yao.

This trip combines the best of both worlds: the spectacular limestone scenery the region is famous for, plus relaxed beach time without the bigger crowds you'll find on other excursions. Krabi sits south of Phuket, so the drive from Khao Lak runs longer than to destinations right on your doorstep — we'd recommend this tour especially to guests already spending several days in the area who are after something off the beaten path.

The Hong Island viewpoint is one of the finest on the whole Andaman coast: from above, you look down on a sheltered lagoon ringed by steep limestone walls, the water shifting between emerald and deep blue depending on the light. There's a snorkel stop at Pakbia Island too — for beginners, or anyone who just wants a short, easy snorkel, it's a great spot. For serious snorkelling with proper reefs, though, we still point people to the Surin Islands (see point 2).

Canoeing Mangroves From age 0

The "Little Amazon" is one of the most underrated trips in the region — a quiet mangrove river you glide along by canoe under a golden-green canopy, past tangled roots, birds, and the occasional monkey. The canoe trip is paired with a walk through the historic old town of Takua Pa, an old trading town with Sino-Portuguese architecture that very few tourists ever get to see.

This tour is unusually relaxed and works even with babies and toddlers — a great choice for families wanting a calmer day between the more action-packed excursions.

Takua Pa itself is a little piece of Thai history most travellers miss entirely: narrow streets lined with decades-old shophouses, small temples, traditional workshops, and a pace of life noticeably slower than the coastal tourist hubs. The walk through the old town feels like a small step back in time — and pairs beautifully with the calm of the mangroves either side of it.

If you only do one tour in Khao Lak, make it this one: the Khao Lak Safari is our most-booked family day out and brings together pretty much everything kids (and adults) want from a day in Thailand — elephant bathing without riding, a relaxed bamboo rafting trip, the Turtle Conservation Centre, a waterfall, a temple, and the Tsunami memorial Police Boat 813 — all in one perfectly organised day.

The elephant experience is the centrepiece: in a natural pool out in the countryside near Phang Nga, kids help scrub the elephants down, wade through the water alongside them and feed them bananas — no riding involved at any point. From there, you'll drift down the river on a traditional bamboo raft while your boatman points out snakes, monkeys, spiders and monitor lizards along the way.

The day follows a tried-and-tested order: hotel pickup in the morning, first stop at the Tsunami memorial Police Boat 813 — a Thai military boat swept far inland during the 2004 disaster, now standing as a moving memorial on the spot. From there it's on to the Turtle Conservation Centre, where injured sea turtles are cared for, nesting sites protected, and young turtles raised before being released into the sea — a programme that regularly has kids asking whether they can "adopt" a turtle (yes, you can — just ask staff on site).

The afternoon brings the elephant experience and bamboo rafting, rounded off with a quick stop at a waterfall to cool down and a small temple. Local Thai food is included throughout the day.

We want to be upfront here: the elephant encounter is respectfully run — no riding, no force, supervised contact in the water — but we don't market it as "fully ethical," since that sets an expectation we want to be realistic about. Sunrise Skywalk Sea Cave Canoeing Very early start, small group

For anyone after an unforgettable start to the day: the Phang Nga Sunrise Tour gets you to the Samet Nangshe Skywalk before sunrise — one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Thailand. From up there, you look out over the whole of Phang Nga Bay as the first light turns the limestone karsts and water gold — a sight worth losing a bit of sleep for.

After sunrise, the tour moves straight onto the water: by traditional longtail boat, we head into the bay to explore the sea caves by canoe — past mangrove forests and through narrow rock passages only reachable by small boat. A further highlight is Koh Panak, where a cave is explored on foot, before continuing on to the world-famous James Bond Island. Lunch is taken in the floating village of Koh Panyee.

The Samet Nangshe Skywalk sits on a hill at the Phang Nga–Krabi border, and while it's no secret among photographers anymore, it's still surprisingly peaceful at sunrise — most visitors arrive much later in the day. If you want to catch that golden light over the bay right as the sun comes up, this is the spot.

Fan Favourite Guided Canoeing Sunset Suitable for older kids

There's no better way to experience Phang Nga Bay than out on the water as the sun goes down. The Twilight Sea Canoe tour heads out in the afternoon, with guided canoe sections into hidden lagoons and caves that larger boats simply can't reach. A stop at James Bond Island itself comes along the way, before a Thai buffet dinner is served on board as the sun disappears behind the limestone karsts.

The real highlight comes after dark: under the right conditions, the water lights up with bioluminescent plankton with every movement — a magical, almost surreal sight, and one that plenty of our guests rank as the single best moment of their whole trip.

One thing worth knowing: the canoe sections are steered by experienced guides, who know exactly where the narrow passages into the caves and lagoons sit — so you're not paddling solo, but being guided safely through tight rock gaps and under low cave roofs while taking the surroundings in. That makes it a great tour even if you've never sat in a canoe before.

Quad Tour Jungle From age 5-6 (with parent) / 11-12 (driving solo)

If you'd rather get your adrenaline up than lie on the beach, this Quad Tour is the one for you. Over 1-2 hours, you'll cover uneven trails, dense jungle and a few scenic viewpoints around Khao Lak. It's a guided trip suited to total beginners and experienced riders alike, with a clear briefing before you set off.

A great add-on to the calmer island tours — short, intense, and you'll come back with a bit of mud on your clothes, guaranteed. Worth knowing upfront: this tour doesn't include any swimming, and no protective gear is provided — closed, sturdy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty are essential.

Before setting off, everyone gets a short briefing on the controls, brakes and steering, followed by a practice loop on flat ground. Kids aged 5-6 can ride up front with a parent; from around age 11-12, with a little prior experience, kids can drive their own quad under supervision.

Our "Best of Khao Sok" Tour Elephants Treehouse Resort From age 5-6

This is our "best of Khao Sok" trip — for anyone who wants more than just a single day in Khao Sok National Park. One thing worth clearing up first, since it trips people up: the overnight stay is not on Cheow Lan Lake — it's at a treehouse resort inside the national park itself. You only visit the lake on day two.

Day 1: The first day starts with a visit to the local market, followed by an elephant experience right on the river in Khao Sok — feeding is always included, with an optional bath alongside the elephants. From there, you'll canoe down the Sok River, passing dense rainforest and limestone formations. In the evening, you'll check into the treehouse resort inside the national park, well away from any light pollution or traffic noise.

Day 2: The second day heads to Cheow Lan Lake, followed by a jungle trek and a cave visit. Lunch, swimming and kayaking all take place at the floating restaurants on the lake, before heading back to Khao Lak.

White Water Rafting ATV Zipline From age 10-12

The Anda Adventure in Song Praek National Park, Phang Nga, is the most action-packed day on this whole list — and the only one combining three adrenaline highlights in a single day: white water rafting through the rapids, ATV on off-road trails, and a zipline through the jungle canopy. A full day for anyone after adrenaline rather than relaxation.

This tour is a step up in intensity compared to most others on this list — we'd recommend it from around age 10-12, and it's especially popular with families travelling with teenagers and groups of friends after something out of the ordinary.

The rafting section covers a stretch of river with several rapids of varying difficulty — experienced guides ride along and steer through the trickier sections while the group paddles together. From there, the programme shifts to ATV riding on off-road trails through Song Praek National Park, before the zipline wraps up the day with one last adrenaline hit through the treetops.

Since this combination is more physically demanding than our other tours, we'd suggest sturdy shoes and a change of clothes — you will get wet during the rafting. A reasonable level of fitness is all you need; no prior experience required.

World Famous Snorkelling Speedboat Long day

The Phi Phi Islands barely need an introduction — ever since "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio, the towering limestone cliffs and turquoise water of Maya Bay have been world-famous. Since Khao Lak sits further away than Phuket, we start especially early to beat the bulk of the crowds and catch the islands in a quieter light.

The day covers several snorkel stops around Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, taking in the famous Maya Bay and the Viking Cave, with time to swim in the crystal-clear water between the sheer cliff faces. It's a long day from Khao Lak, but well worth it for anyone who wants to see this spot in person at least once.

Maya Bay itself has changed quite a bit in recent years: after a multi-year closure to let the reef recover, stricter visitor rules were brought in, including fixed time slots and a no-swimming policy right at the beach to protect the coral. The result is a bay that feels noticeably healthier and less crowded than it did a few years ago — a good example of conservation and tourism actually working together when it's managed properly.

If you want to take home more from Thailand than just photos, our Thai Cooking Class is worth setting aside an afternoon for. The format is always the same: first, a trip together to the local market, where fresh ingredients like lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves and Thai chillies get introduced — ingredients most European kitchens rarely stock, but which give Thai cooking its signature flavour. Our newest addition to the programme is a genuine standout: aboard the Aurora Sea, a comfortable premium speed catamaran, you'll explore Phang Nga Bay in the afternoon and evening — exactly the time of day when most other tours are already heading back.
