Phuket International Airport is one of Thailand's busiest, with many direct international flights and budget domestic carriers — so getting there is usually cheaper and more flexible. Koh Samui Airport is a small, boutique airport served mainly by a single premium carrier, which keeps flight prices higher; the budget-friendly alternative is to fly to Surat Thani on the mainland and continue by bus-and-ferry, which is cheaper but takes longer. Overall, Phuket tends to be the more budget-flexible island — mostly because flights are cheaper and it has a wider spread of budget hotels, hostels and cheap eats.
