Phuket International Airport (airport code: HKT) is the gateway to southern Thailand — and for most Khao Lak visitors, the first stop after a long flight. 📋 TDAC — The New Digital Entry Card (since May 2025)
Since 1 May 2025, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is mandatory for all visitors to Thailand. It replaces the old paper form TM6 that used to be filled in on the plane. The key facts:
- When to complete: No earlier than 72 hours (3 days) before arrival — and no later
- Where: Only on the official site tdac.immigration.go.th — do not use third-party sites, some charge fees for a free service
- Cost: Completely free
- What you need: Passport (number, expiry), flight details (flight number, arrival date), accommodation in Thailand (first address)
- Result: A QR code — save it as a screenshot and show it at immigration
- Who needs it: All foreign visitors — including visa-exempt travellers; children need their own TDAC
⚠️ Forgot the TDAC? There are kiosks in the arrivals area at Phuket Airport where you can complete it on arrival — but expect waiting time. 10 minutes at home beats 45 minutes at the airport. Errors in name, passport number or date of birth cannot be corrected online — a new TDAC must be submitted. Fill it in carefully.
✅ Since March 2026: Phuket Airport has Automated Border Control (ABC) gates with facial recognition for travellers who have completed their TDAC. This significantly reduces waiting time at immigration during peak periods.
🛬 Arrival: Step by Step Through the Airport
After landing at Phuket International Airport, arrivals typically proceed as follows:
- Exit and walk to immigration — The terminal is well signposted in English. Follow "Immigration" signs.
- Immigration control — Show your TDAC QR code and passport. ABC gates (facial recognition) are significantly faster. In high season (Dec–Mar) waits can be 30–60 minutes — in low season often under 10 minutes.
- Baggage claim — Departure boards show the belt number for your flight.
- Customs — Green channel (nothing to declare) for most holidaymakers. Red channel if you're carrying goods above the duty-free limits.
- Arrivals hall — This is where drivers with name boards meet you, plus SIM card counters, currency exchange, ATMs and other services.
📌 Important for Khao Lak guests: If you've booked a private transfer with us, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a board showing your name. WhatsApp us once you have your luggage — we'll confirm the exact meeting point.
💰 Money — ATMs and Exchange at the Airport
Directly after customs at Phuket Airport you'll find ATMs from all major Thai banks and currency exchange counters. The key facts:

⚠️ DCC trap: If the ATM asks "Would you like to pay in your home currency or Thai Baht?" — always choose Thai Baht. Paying in your home currency means the machine sets its own (poor) exchange rate and charges 3–7% extra. Thai ATMs charge a flat fee of 220 Baht per withdrawal — so withdraw larger amounts less often.
Our arrival tip: Withdraw 2,000–3,000 Baht from the airport ATM for your transfer and first meal. Get the rest in Khao Lak — the rate is significantly better.
📱 SIM Card at the Airport
Right in the arrivals hall after customs you'll find counters from AIS, True/dtac and TrueMove H. All three offer tourist SIM cards. Since August 2025 your passport is required for purchase — have it ready.
- 15-day unlimited data: 299–499 Baht depending on provider
- Activation takes 10–20 minutes
- In high season queues can be long — buying an eSIM before departure saves time
- All providers work well in Phuket and Khao Lak

🏨 Transfer from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak
Khao Lak is approximately 80 km north of Phuket Airport — a journey of around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. This is by far the most important transfer information for our guests, as Khao Lak has no transfer hub of its own.

✈️ Tip for Khao Lak guests arriving via Bangkok: If you fly domestic from Bangkok (BKK or DMK) to Phuket, you'll land at Domestic Terminal (T2). Our driver will be waiting outside EXIT 1 with your name board. Please specify at booking whether you're arriving international or domestic — so we can position your driver at the right exit.
✈️ Tips for Departure from Phuket
- Check-in time: For international flights arrive 3 hours before departure — security queues can be long in high season
- Liquids in carry-on: The 100ml rule applies. Sunscreen, mosquito repellent and any liquids from your holiday must go in checked luggage or in 100ml containers in a clear zip bag
- Prohibited souvenirs: Real animal products (ivory, coral, shells, dried seafood) may not be taken out of the country — confiscation and fines apply
- Temple souvenirs: Buddha figures and religious symbols may not officially leave Thailand. In practice inexpensive souvenirs are rarely stopped, but more valuable pieces can be confiscated at customs
- Remaining Baht: You can exchange these back at the airport (you'll get slightly less than the buying rate). Alternatively: use small notes for tips, exchange larger amounts
🏛️ Phuket Airport Layout and Orientation
Phuket International Airport (HKT) has two terminals:
- Terminal 1 (International Terminal): Where you land on direct flights from Europe (Frankfurt, Amsterdam etc.) and most international connections. Immigration, baggage claim and all transfer services are here.
- Terminal 2 (Domestic Terminal): For domestic flights from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi BKK or Don Mueang DMK) and other Thai cities. If you fly Bangkok first and then domestic, you land here. Both terminals are connected by a short walkway (5 minutes on foot).
💡 Connecting via Bangkok? Allow at least 90 minutes for your connection in Bangkok — in Suvarnabhumi (BKK) often more. If you only have 60 minutes, it can be tight especially if your first flight lands late. Don Mueang (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi are different Bangkok airports — never try to connect between them on a tight schedule.

⚠️ Tip for Thai souvenirs in carry-on: Liquids (Thai sauce, nam prik, sambal) can only go in carry-on in containers up to 100ml. Larger bottles must go in checked luggage. If you buy items as souvenirs, buy them in the departure area (after security) — these go through the normal duty-free process without the liquid restriction.
🚗 Car Rental at Phuket Airport
All major rental companies are in the arrivals area: Avis, Hertz, Budget, Sixt and Thai providers such as Thai Rent A Car. A rental car gives you flexibility — but there are a few things worth knowing first:

Thailand drives on the left — if you're not used to this, give yourself some time to adjust. Motorbikes are popular in Phuket but accidents happen more frequently than in Europe — usually due to unexpected traffic situations. Always wear a helmet and check your insurance cover before riding.
For rental cars: make sure you have fully comprehensive insurance (fully inclusive) — without it, accident costs can be significant. Also check whether your travel health insurance covers motorbike accidents, as many policies explicitly exclude them.

After the long flight and transfer, most guests are tired but excited. What matters in the first hours in Khao Lak:
- Hotel check-in: Many Khao Lak hotels allow early check-in from 12:00 — check in advance and let them know your arrival time
- Activate SIM card: If you didn't buy one at the airport, there are SIM card shops and 7-Elevens in Khao Lak
- Cash: ATMs in Khao Lak (Bang La On main street) — visit after hotel check-in
- First meal: Khao Lak has excellent Thai restaurants along the main street — don't go to the first tourist spot you see; walk 200m further for the same quality at half the price
- Book tours: If you haven't pre-booked tours (Similan, Khao Sok, Phang Nga), do it on your first evening — popular tours fill up quickly in high season

How long does it take from the plane to the exit?
In low season 20–30 minutes. In high season (December to March) immigration can take 45–90 minutes. Travellers who can use the ABC gates (completed TDAC + biometric passport) often get through faster. Allow extra time for tight onward connections or pre-booked transfers.
Can you stay overnight at Phuket Airport?
Yes — there are several hotels near the airport (approx. 5–10 minutes by taxi). Inside the terminal there are no official sleeping facilities, but lounges and rest areas. For early morning flights from Khao Lak, we recommend spending your last night in Phuket and booking a transfer to the airport in the morning.
Is there luggage storage at Phuket Airport?
Yes — paid luggage storage is available in the departure area for short waits. For guests exploring Phuket first and then travelling to Khao Lak, it's more practical to send luggage directly to the hotel or store it there.
