🗺️ At a Glance — What Each Tour Offers

Before we dig into the detail, here's the essential picture. Both tours depart early in the morning from Phuket or Khao Lak, both use speedboats, both are full-day experiences of around 8 hours, and both include hotel pickup, breakfast at the marina, lunch and snorkeling. The differences are in the character of the destinations — and that character is where everything hinges.

🏝️ Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour — What to Expect

The Phi Phi Islands need no introduction. Formed from dramatic karst limestone rising straight from the Andaman Sea, the two main islands — Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh — represent some of the most photographed scenery in all of Southeast Asia. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh, made globally famous by the 2000 Leonardo DiCaprio film "The Beach," is one of the most visited natural sites in Thailand.

Our Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour is built around one core principle: get there before everyone else. Departing before 07:00 from the marina by speedboat, you arrive at Maya Bay while it is still quiet, still genuinely beautiful, and still worth the journey.

The Key Stops on the Phi Phi Tour

🎬

Maya Bay, Phi Phi Leh

The icon. Enclosed by 100m limestone cliffs, powdery white sand and water so clear it barely looks real. Access is regulated — no swimming in the bay itself, no boats docking on the beach, timed entry. Our early departure gets you here first.

💚

Pileh Lagoon

A natural lagoon enclosed entirely by towering limestone walls. The water colour — an emerald green that shifts to turquoise — is unlike anything else in Thailand. One of the most visually arresting spots on the entire tour.

🦇

Viking Cave

Passed by boat on Phi Phi Leh. Famous for the ancient cave paintings inside (which give it the Viking name) and the bamboo scaffolding used to harvest edible swiftlet nests — a centuries-old tradition.

🐒

Monkey Beach

A small beach on Phi Phi Don where wild macaques roam freely. Typically viewed from the water to avoid disturbing the animals. Always a hit with children and wildlife lovers.

🏖️

Bamboo Island

A small, quieter island north of Phi Phi Don with a long sandy beach and calm shallow water — perfect for a relaxed swim before heading back. Often the most peaceful part of the day.

🤿

Snorkeling Stops

The waters around the Phi Phi Islands have reef fish and coral — a fun snorkeling stop, though not the most vibrant reefs in the Andaman. Snorkeling equipment is included in the tour price.

Maya Bay is closed for environmental restoration from August 1 to September 30 each year. During this period, the tour visits Bamboo Island for extended beach time instead. Outside these months, Maya Bay is open and the early departure gives you the best possible access.

🏖️ Krabi 4 Islands Early Bird Tour — What to Expect

The Krabi 4 Islands Tour is a different kind of day. Where Phi Phi is about iconic landmarks and dramatic scenery concentrated in a small area, the Krabi experience is about variety — multiple islands, multiple beaches, multiple characters — connected by the warm, clear waters of the Andaman Sea.

Poda Island is one of Thailand's most beautiful beaches, full stop. Koh Hong offers snorkeling, a beach backed by limestone cliffs and jungle, and a panoramic viewpoint that rivals anything in the region. And the famous sandbank connecting Chicken Island, Tub Island and Mor Island at low tide — Thale Waek — is a genuinely unique natural phenomenon you won't find on any other tour from Phuket.

Departing from Royal Phuket Marina with an early start — Phuket pickup 05:00–05:45, Khao Lak 04:00–04:45 — you arrive at Poda Island before the local Krabi long-tail boats begin their morning runs — meaning the beach is yours.

The Key Stops on the Krabi 4 Islands Tour

🏝️

Poda Island (Koh Poda)

Your first stop — and immediately one of the most stunning beaches you'll ever see. Powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, a dramatic limestone rock rising from the sea. One of the most photographed beaches in all of Thailand.

🚶

Thale Waek Sandbank

At low tide, a spectacular white sandbank emerges connecting Chicken Island, Tub Island and Mor Island. You walk between three islands, surrounded by shallow turquoise water on both sides. A genuinely unique experience — impossible to replicate.

🤿

Koh Hong Snorkeling

Jump into the warm Andaman Sea around Koh Hong for excellent snorkeling in calm, clear water above coral reefs filled with colourful tropical fish. Well-suited to both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

🌿

Koh Hong Beach

A beautiful beach enclosed by towering limestone cliffs and lush jungle — the quintessential Krabi landscape. Time to swim, sunbathe or explore before continuing the island hop.

🔭

Hong Island Viewpoint

A short staircase climb to a 360-degree panoramic viewpoint over emerald lagoons, limestone islands and the open Andaman Sea. One of the finest viewpoints in southern Thailand — entirely worth the effort.

🍜

Lunch at Lao Lading

A freshly prepared Thai lunch served in a beautiful tropical setting on Hong Island. After a full morning of island hopping, this is a welcome pause before the afternoon continues.

🎨 Scenery & Wow Factor

This is where the two tours diverge most sharply — and where your personal preference matters most.

Phi Phi: dramatic, cinematic, iconic

The Phi Phi Islands are visually extraordinary. Maya Bay with its 100-metre limestone cliffs enclosing a perfect crescent of white sand is one of those places that genuinely exceeds expectations even when you've seen a thousand photos. Pileh Lagoon is equally breathtaking — an enclosed body of water so deeply green it looks like a painting. The scenery is concentrated, intense and immediately recognisable. If you want the Thailand postcard moment, this is it.

Krabi 4 Islands: varied, panoramic, surprising

The Krabi experience offers a different kind of beauty. Poda Island is not a consolation prize — it is genuinely one of the finest beaches in southern Thailand, with water so clear the sandy bottom is visible at three metres depth. The sandbank walk at Thale Waek is something you simply cannot do anywhere else. The Hong Island viewpoint provides a panorama across an entire island chain that rivals anything at Phi Phi. And because you visit five distinct stops, the day feels more like an adventure than a sightseeing exercise.

🎯 On scenery: Phi Phi wins on raw drama and global recognition — Maya Bay is Maya Bay. But Krabi wins on variety and the sense of discovery. If you've already seen Phi Phi, Krabi will genuinely surprise you. If it's your first time in Thailand, you'll likely want Phi Phi for the bucket-list moment.

🤿 Snorkeling & Marine Life

Neither tour is primarily a snorkeling tour — both are island-hopping experiences that include snorkeling stops rather than being defined by them. If world-class snorkeling is your main priority, the Similan Islands or Surin Islands will give you something more remarkable. But both Phi Phi and Krabi offer enjoyable snorkeling with tropical fish, coral and good visibility in calm conditions.

Phi Phi snorkeling takes place in the waters around the islands — reef fish and coral, enjoyable for most guests, though the reefs are not the most pristine in the Andaman. Visibility is moderate and conditions vary. The sites can be busy with other boats in peak season.

Krabi snorkeling at Koh Hong is generally calm and well-sheltered, making it particularly good for beginners, first-time snorkelers and children. The coral gardens around Koh Hong are healthy and the water is typically clear.

💡 Snorkeling tip: Bring reef-safe sunscreen (both tours). Standard sunscreen harms coral reefs. Reef-safe options are available in Phuket and Khao Lak — bring from home if possible as quality options are more expensive in Thailand.

👥 Crowds & Atmosphere

This is one of the most practically important factors when choosing between the two tours — and one that many booking guides gloss over.

Phi Phi is busier. Maya Bay is one of the most visited natural sites in Thailand — access is now regulated (timed entry, no beach docking, no swimming in the bay itself), but visitor numbers are high during peak season. Our early bird departure mitigates this substantially: you arrive well ahead of the main fleet of tourist boats from Phuket, and the difference in experience between early morning and mid-morning at Maya Bay is enormous. That said, you will see other boats. Peak season (December–March) can be particularly busy.

Krabi 4 Islands is quieter. This is not a hidden secret, but it is genuinely less visited than Phi Phi — particularly the Poda Island and Koh Hong stops, which attract fewer tourist boats than Maya Bay. The early departure from Phuket means you typically arrive at Poda Island before the Krabi-based boats start their morning run, giving you a beach that feels almost private. German guests who have done both often tell us Krabi felt like the better-kept secret.

The honest reality: Both tours are run as early bird departures specifically to beat the crowds. The difference is that at Phi Phi, you're racing against a larger fleet. At Krabi, the competition is smaller. If absolute peace and quiet is your goal, Krabi 4 Islands wins. If you don't mind some company in exchange for the world's most famous bay, Phi Phi delivers.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families & Children — Which Tour is Better?

Both tours are suitable for families with children aged 5 and above. Here is where they differ in practical terms:

Phi Phi for families

Both tours use a speedboat, so the crossing experience is similar. The Monkey Beach stop is consistently the highlight for younger travellers on Phi Phi. Maya Bay has regulated access — viewed from the water — which is less demanding for restless children than a full beach landing. Bamboo Island has calm, shallow water ideal for children to swim.

Krabi 4 Islands for families

The Krabi tour visits more beaches with calm, shallow water — particularly Poda Island and Koh Hong beach — which are excellent for children to swim and play. The sandbank walk is a favourite with children of all ages. The Hong Island viewpoint is a short staircase climb — manageable for children from around 5–6 years. The speedboat ride is dynamic and adventurous — most children love it.

👨‍👩‍👧 Our family recommendation: Both tours use a speedboat, so conditions are comparable for families. For children with seasickness concerns, take medication before departure on either tour. For children 5+, both tours work well — many families tell us the Krabi sandbank was the highlight of their entire holiday.

🏆 Our Honest Verdict After Nearly 20 Years in Thai Tourism

If it's your first time in Thailand and you only have one day for an island tour from Phuket, choose Phi Phi. Maya Bay is one of those places that has to be seen — and our early bird departure gives you the best possible experience of it, arriving well before the main tourist fleet.

If you've done Phi Phi before — or if you simply prefer fewer crowds, more beach variety and a day that feels more like exploration than tourism — choose Krabi 4 Islands. The sandbank alone is worth it. Poda Island is worth it. The viewpoint is worth it. And you'll almost certainly feel like you had the better-kept secret of the two.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which tour is better for first-time visitors to Thailand?
We recommend the Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour for first-time visitors. Maya Bay is one of those genuinely unmissable experiences — and our early bird speedboat departure gives you the best possible version of it. That said, if you've seen Phi Phi in photos a hundred times and want something you won't have seen before, the Krabi 4 Islands tour will surprise you.
Can I do both tours in one trip?
Absolutely — and many guests do. With a week or more in Phuket or Khao Lak, doing both tours on separate days is very manageable. Many of our returning guests tell us that doing both back-to-back in the same trip gave them a much more complete picture of southern Thailand's islands than either tour alone. We can organise both with a single WhatsApp message.
Which tour is better for families with young children?
Both tours welcome children aged 5 and above. For younger children (5–8), the Phi Phi Early Bird Speedboat is equally well-suited — both tours use a speedboat, so conditions are similar. For children 8 and above, both are equally suitable. The Krabi sandbank and Monkey Beach at Phi Phi are consistently the most popular stops with children. Contact us before booking and we'll advise based on your children's ages.
Is the Phi Phi tour worth it if Maya Bay is closed (August–September)?
Yes. During the Maya Bay closure (August 1–September 30), the tour substitutes with extended time at Bamboo Island, which is genuinely beautiful and much quieter than Maya Bay normally is. Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and snorkeling stops are unchanged. Many guests who visit in this period prefer it for the lower overall crowds.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as possible — especially December through March. Both tours fill up quickly in peak season. An early booking also ensures you get the pickup slot that works best for your hotel. Contact us on WhatsApp as soon as you know your travel dates — we can hold your spot immediately.
What if the weather is bad?
Both tours operate year-round when sea conditions are safe. In the rare event of unsafe conditions, we contact you as early as possible and offer a reschedule or full refund. The best conditions for both tours are November to April (dry season). May to October can bring rain and higher seas, but both destinations remain beautiful and tours continue whenever it's safe to do so.
Do you offer a German-speaking guide on these tours?
Both tours are guided in multiple languages: English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. Whatever your language, you will be looked after throughout the day.
What is the sandbank on the Krabi 4 Islands tour?
The Thale Waek sandbank is a natural white sand bar that appears at low tide, connecting Chicken Island, Tub Island and Mor Island. When the tide drops, you can walk from island to island surrounded by shallow turquoise water on both sides. It is tide-dependent — your guide plans the itinerary to arrive at exactly the right time. It's one of the most unique experiences on any island tour from Phuket.
Which tour has better snorkeling?
Both tours offer enjoyable snorkeling with tropical fish and coral. If you're specifically after world-class snorkeling with exceptional visibility and marine diversity, we'd point you toward the Similan Islands or Surin Islands instead. But as part of an island-hopping day, both Phi Phi and Krabi offer fun, colourful snorkeling that most guests thoroughly enjoy.
