🏝️ What Are the Similan Islands?
The Similan Islands — officially Mu Ko Similan National Park — are a chain of nine granite islands roughly 70 kilometres off the Khao Lak coast in the Andaman Sea. The name "Similan" comes from the Malay word for nine. Since 1982 the archipelago has been protected as a Thai national park, and for very good reason.
Above the waterline you'll find enormous smooth granite boulders rising from the sea, powder-soft white sand beaches, and jungle-covered interiors. Below the surface: coral gardens alive with tropical fish, sea turtles, reef sharks, and visibility that regularly exceeds 30 metres. It's not an exaggeration to say this is one of the finest snorkeling destinations anywhere in Southeast Asia.
The most visited spots on a day trip include:
- Island No. 8 — Similan Island (Donald Duck Bay): The icon of the archipelago. Dramatic boulders, a short viewpoint hike, and the famous turquoise bay for swimming and photos.
- Island No. 4 — Koh Miang: National Park headquarters, beautiful beaches, and Princess Bay — excellent snorkeling in calm waters.
- Island No. 9 — Koh Ba Ngu: Christmas Point, one of the park's top snorkeling sites with dense coral and abundant marine life.
- Islands No. 5 & 6: Rich reef snorkeling, typically visited en route to the main islands.
📅 When Is the Best Time to Visit the Similan Islands?
The national park is open from approximately mid-October to mid-May each year. During the monsoon season (June to mid-October) the park closes to allow coral reefs and marine ecosystems to recover.
The sweet spot is November through April. During these months you can expect:
- Calm sea conditions with minimal swell
- Underwater visibility often reaching 20–30+ metres
- Sunny days, dry weather, water temperature 28–30°C
- All tour options available, full itinerary possible
In October and May (shoulder season) the park is open but conditions can be rougher. These months suit experienced swimmers and divers. For families with young children, December through March offers the calmest conditions and best overall experience.
📍 Similan Islands from Khao Lak vs. from Phuket — Why Khao Lak Wins
Guests staying in Phuket often ask whether they should join a Similan tour from Phuket or travel up to Khao Lak to depart from there. The answer is clear: Khao Lak is the significantly better departure point.
The Similan Islands lie approximately 70 km from the Khao Lak coast — versus over 100 km from Phuket. Our departure pier is at Ban Nam Khem, north of Khao Lak, putting you even closer to the islands. The speedboat journey takes approximately 60–80 minutes. From Phuket the same trip takes 2.5 to 3 hours each way — meaning guests lose up to 5–6 hours of their day just travelling.
Departing from Khao Lak means you arrive at the islands earlier, spend more time snorkeling and exploring, and return at a reasonable hour — not exhausted after hours at sea. This difference is especially significant for families with children.
🚤 Speedboat vs. Speed Catamaran — Which Should You Choose?
Go Travel Phuket offers two distinct Similan Islands day trips, both departing from Ban Nam Khem Pier, north of Khao Lak. Both include German-speaking and English-speaking guides — a genuine rarity, and one that makes a real difference to the quality and enjoyment of your day.
🚤 Option 1: Similan Islands Early Bird by Speedboat
Our most popular tour, and the one we recommend for most guests. Pickups begin at 05:00 for southern Khao Lak beaches and up to 06:00 for northern beaches — meaning you arrive at the islands before the main wave of day-trippers from Phuket and other operators. This early bird advantage is real: quieter beaches, undisturbed snorkeling spots, more space to enjoy the experience.
🛥️ Option 2: Similan Islands by Speed Catamaran
The twin-hull design of the catamaran significantly reduces motion compared to a monohull speedboat, offering a smoother, more spacious crossing. This makes it the preferred choice for:
- Families with young children — from approximately 2–3 years old
- Guests who are prone to seasickness
- Travellers who prioritise comfort during the transfer
Side-by-side comparison

🤿 Similan Islands vs. Surin Islands — Which Should You Choose?
One of the most common questions we receive: "Should we go to the Similan Islands or the Surin Islands?" Both are protected marine parks in the Andaman Sea, both open October to May, and both reachable from Khao Lak. Here's our honest comparison:
- Thailand's most iconic snorkel destination
- Dramatic granite boulders above & below water
- Beautiful white sand beaches
- Multiple islands visited in one day
- Closer to Khao Lak (~60–80 min from pier)
- Busy in peak season — early departure helps
- Higher chance to see sea turtle during snorkeling
- Best for first-timers, families, all-round experience
- Less visited — quieter, more unspoilt atmosphere
- Arguably better coral reef condition
- Higher chance of whale sharks, dolphins (March–April)
- Moken (sea gypsy) village — unique cultural encounter
- Further north — longer boat journey (~80-90 minutes
- Best for repeat visitors, divers, nature lovers
