📱 eSIM or Physical SIM — Which is Better?
This is the first question to ask yourself — before comparing any provider or package. The answer depends almost entirely on whether your smartphone supports eSIM.

📱 Our recommendation: If you have a newer smartphone (iPhone XS or later, Android from 2020 — check under Settings → Mobile or SIM card), choose eSIM. Buy it before departure, activate on landing, and have data from the first moment in the terminal — no queuing, no paperwork. Airalo and Saily are the most reliable providers.
📶 The Three Main Providers — AIS, True and dtac
Thailand has three major mobile operators. dtac and True merged in 2023 to form True Corporation, but still operate both brands and networks. For tourists in Phuket and Khao Lak: all three are perfectly adequate.

💡 Honest recommendation: Get AIS for best coverage (important for Khao Sok and day trips in rural areas) or dtac/True for cheaper prices in tourist centres. The difference for a 2-week beach holiday is minimal. Buy whatever is available at the airport counter — you can't go wrong.
✈️ Buying a SIM Card at Phuket Airport
At Phuket International Airport (HKT) you'll find several SIM card counters from AIS, True/dtac and TrueMove H in the arrivals hall directly after customs. Since August 2025 a passport is mandatory for SIM purchases in Thailand.
How it works at the airport:
- Have your passport ready
- Choose your package (15 days covers most holidays)
- Passport details are recorded (10–20 minutes)
- SIM is activated and inserted
- Check data connection
⚠️ Airport downside: Prices at the airport are officially identical to in-town — but after a long flight the queues can be long. Allow 20–30 minutes. With an eSIM you skip all of this completely.
🏪 Buying a SIM Card at 7-Eleven
At every 7-Eleven in Khao Lak and Phuket you can buy SIM starter packs — mostly from True/dtac and TrueMove H. Advantages: cheaper than the airport, no queue. Downside: activation must be done yourself, no guaranteed English-speaking support.

📌 Note on "unlimited": Unlimited data packages in Thailand mean full speed up to a certain threshold (usually 30–100 GB), then throttled to lower speeds. For normal holiday use (navigation, WhatsApp, social media) this is more than enough — you won't hit the throttle limit in 2 weeks.

An eSIM is a digital SIM — you buy it online, receive a QR code and activate it without a physical card. Your phone keeps your home number active for calls while the eSIM handles data.

💡 Before Khao Sok tours: Download Google Maps offline for the Khao Sok area — there is no mobile signal inside the national park.
📲 Step-by-Step: Setting Up an eSIM Before You Fly
- Check compatibility: iPhone → Settings → Mobile → Add SIM. Android → Settings → Network → SIM → Add eSIM.
- Choose provider: Airalo.com or Saily.com — both have apps and simple booking interfaces. Select your Thailand package.
- Pay and receive QR code: By email or in the app after payment.
- Install eSIM (at home): iPhone: Settings → Mobile → Add eSIM → scan QR code. Now installed but not yet active.
- Activate on landing: Settings → Mobile → activate Thailand eSIM. Your home SIM stays active for calls.
✅ Important: Some eSIM packages start from purchase, others from activation. Check the terms when buying — "Starts on activation" is better value for travellers.

- Grab — Thailand's Uber: cheap taxis in Phuket with fixed prices. Requires a Thai SIM to set up.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions — Thailand SIM Card
Can I use my home SIM in Thailand (roaming)?
Yes technically — but international roaming charges in Thailand are usually very expensive (often €5–10 per day). EU roaming rules don't apply outside the EU. A local Thai SIM or eSIM is almost always the cheaper and better solution.
Do I need a SIM card if my hotel has Wi-Fi?
On day trips, in Grab taxis, on the beach and in national parks you need mobile data — hotel Wi-Fi won't help you there. A SIM or eSIM is far more practical for your holiday than relying on Wi-Fi only.
Do I keep my home phone number?
With an eSIM your home number stays active and you can use both at the same time. With a physical Thai SIM you need to remove your home SIM (unless your phone is dual SIM). WhatsApp, Signal and other apps run over data, not over your number.
How much does a call back home cost with a Thai SIM?
International calls are expensive — often 5–15 Baht per minute. Recommendation: use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal for calls home. These run over your data flat rate at no extra cost.
Can I extend the SIM card if I stay longer?
Yes — all providers allow extensions via app, in shops or at 7-Eleven. For AIS download the AIS app and buy a package. For True/dtac use the My True-H app. You can also simply buy a new SIM.
