Travel Tips · Season & ClimatePhuket & Khao Lak Rainy Season 2026 — What to Really Expect
The rainy season in Phuket and Khao Lak (May to October) has a worse reputation than it deserves. Many Europeans travel in July and August — and have an excellent holiday. This guide tells you honestly: when it rains, how long, what still works, what doesn't, and why the rainy season is actually the better choice for certain travellers.

🌧️ What is the Rain Actually Like? The Honest Picture
The biggest misconception about Thailand's rainy season: most people imagine it rains non-stop for days or weeks. That's not true. A typical day in Phuket and Khao Lak during the rainy season looks like this:
- Morning: cloudy or sunny, warm, 28–31°C
- Midday: often clearing up
- Afternoon or evening: intense showers, 1–3 hours, then clear again
- Night: often dry, cooler and pleasant
If it rains for 2–3 days in a row — which does happen, especially in September and October — Phuket is the ideal base. The island has some of the biggest shopping centres in southern Thailand:
- Central Festival Phuket — huge mall with cinema, restaurants, international brands
- Central Phuket Floresta — modern lifestyle centre right next door
- Jungceylon Patong — large shopping mall in the heart of Patong
- Thai cooking classes — a perfect activity for rainy days
- Spa & massage — available almost everywhere and cheaper than high season
- Phuket Town & Old Town — Sino-Portuguese architecture, cafes, museums, street food — great even in the rain
Khao Lak is much smaller and has no large shopping centres. For longer rainy spells we recommend a day trip to Phuket or a pre-booked indoor activity.
You won't be stuck in your room during the rainy season. You'll be at the beach, on day trips, eating out and having a great holiday — with occasional intense rain that just needs a poncho and a bit of flexibility. September and October are the most intense months — then it can rain heavily for several days in a row and the sea is often unwelcoming.

✅ What Works During the Rainy Season
The good news: many tours run all year round — and are often more beautiful in the rainy season because nature is lush and green and there are fewer tourists.
- Khao Sok National Park — open year-round; the rainforest is at its peak during the green season. Cheow Lan Lake, jungle trekking and floating bungalow stays are all possible. → Khao Sok Guide
- Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island — kayaking through sea caves, Koh Panyee and the dramatic karst landscape work fine in the rain — colours are often even more intense. → Phang Nga Guide
- Khao Lak Safari — river safari, elephant encounter, market visits — all operate year-round
- Phuket sights — temples (Wat Chalong, Big Buddha), Old Town, markets — all year round
- Beach — all beaches on Phuket's west coast will have a red flag throughout the low season — swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and waves. The beaches in Khao Lak are also on the west coast and are dangerous during the rainy season — swimming there is not advisable. Swimming is usually possible on Phuket's east coast, for example Ao Yon Beach or Cape Panwa. The Similan and Surin Islands are completely closed from May to October.
- Massage, cooking class, shopping — year-round, often more relaxed than high season
❌ What Doesn't Work During the Rainy Season
- Similan Islands and Surin Islands: Both national parks are closed from mid-May to mid-October. No exceptions. If snorkelling at the Similan Islands is your main goal, you must come in the dry season (November to April). → Similan vs Surin Guide
- Open-water snorkelling: The Andaman Sea is often rough during the rainy season. Snorkelling in open water is restricted or impossible — especially September and October.
- Pure beach holiday: Anyone who mainly wants to spend hours lying on the beach with guaranteed sunshine should choose the dry season.
🏖️ Khao Lak in the Rainy Season — Better Than Phuket?
For many guests, Khao Lak is actually more enjoyable than Phuket during the rainy season. Here's why:
- Khao Lak has little mass tourism even in high season — in the rainy season it's even quieter and more authentic
- The nature around Khao Lak — rainforest, waterfalls, national parks — is at its peak during the rainy season
- Khao Sok is so close that you experience the rain in the jungle as part of the adventure, not as a nuisance
- Hotels in Khao Lak are 30–50% cheaper during the rainy season than in high season — excellent value
- Fewer tourists means better service, shorter waits and a more relaxed atmosphere
👨👩👧 Rainy Season with Children — Is It Possible?
Yes — many German families travel to Khao Lak in July and August and have wonderful experiences. The key is managing expectations and planning the right tours:
- Khao Sok National Park is family-friendly and operates during the rainy season — elephant experiences, kayaking, discovery tours
- Phang Nga Bay works even in light rain — sea caves are spectacular and even more dramatic in the rain
- Families with children benefit from the lower price level in low season
- Children need more sun protection, more mosquito repellent and more rest time — plan quieter afternoons

🎯 When Should You Travel — Our Honest Recommendation
| Your main goal | Best time to visit | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Similan / Surin Islands | November to April | May to October (closed) |
| Beach & swimming | November to April | September / October |
| Khao Sok & jungle | Year-round — rainy season = especially green jungle | No bad month |
| Lowest prices | May to October (30–50% cheaper) | Sep/Oct for beach-focused travellers |
| Family holiday (European summer holidays) | July / August — great experiences, but plan for rain | September |
| Christmas / New Year | Perfect weather — but book EARLY | Last-minute — sold out everywhere |
🌦️ Month by Month — What to Really Expect
May — Rainy season begins, but still relaxed
The Similan and Surin Islands close in mid-May. The first rain showers arrive, but the weather character is still mixed. Many mornings are sunny, afternoons get wetter. Hotel prices drop significantly. An excellent time for travellers who want to combine a beach holiday with Khao Sok — the jungle is particularly lush green in May.
June, July, August — European summer holidays
This is when we welcome the most guests from German-speaking countries — school summer holidays, European accommodation too expensive, long-haul travel as an alternative. The rainy season in Phuket and Khao Lak during these months is perfectly manageable with some preparation and the right expectations:
- Mornings mostly dry or only lightly overcast
- Afternoons often intense showers (1–3 hours)
- Khao Sok, Phang Nga and safari tours run without problems
- The beaches in Khao Lak are also on the west coast — strong currents are possible during the rainy season; red flags must always be observed
- 30–50% cheaper hotels than in December/January
- No crowds at beach restaurants and attractions
September & October — The most intense months
September and October are the strongest rain months. The sea is often rough, red flags at beaches are common. We don't recommend these months for first-time visitors or for anyone who mainly wants beach time. For those who do travel: Khao Sok, Phang Nga and cultural activities are still possible. Hotels are available at rock-bottom prices.
November — Transition: the hidden gem of the year
The best tip for experienced Thailand travellers: October/November. The rainy season fades, the Similan Islands reopen from mid-October, but the high season crowds haven't arrived yet. Cheaper prices than December to March, but already with very good weather. Mid-November to mid-December is objectively one of the best times to visit — most people just don't know it yet.
🌿 What's Especially Beautiful in the Rainy Season — Honest Observations
After nearly 20 years in southern Thailand, there are things I actually prefer about the rainy season over the dry season:
- The smell of rain in the rainforest: Khao Sok after a shower smells like the primeval forest it actually is. In the dry season this intense experience is missing.
- Waterfalls: The waterfalls around Khao Lak and Phang Nga are spectacular during the rainy season. In the dry season some are little more than a trickle.
- Dramatic skies: The huge storm clouds over the Andaman Sea at sunset — photographers love it. Rainy season photos often look more dramatic and impressive than dry season ones.
- Authentic Thailand: In the low season you see more local guests and fewer European tour groups. Restaurants are more relaxed, service more personal, admission prices lower.
- Cooler evenings: The rainy season often brings more pleasant evening temperatures — instead of 33°C until 10pm, sometimes just 28°C after a shower.
📦 What Extra to Pack for the Rainy Season
In addition to the regular Thailand packing list, specifically for the rainy season:
- Lightweight foldable rain poncho: Umbrellas are impractical on boats and in the wind. A foldable poncho (about 15x15cm folded) is the best solution.
- Quick-dry clothing: Even more important than in the dry season. Cotton stays wet and uncomfortable for a long time after a shower.
- Waterproof sandals: Plastic flip flops dry quickly — leather sandals quickly become unpleasant when wet.
- Dry bag: Even more important in the rainy season for your phone, camera and important documents on boat tours.
- Stronger mosquito repellent: Mosquitoes are more active in the rainy season, especially near standing water and mangroves.
🏨 Hotels in Khao Lak During the Rainy Season
Most of the larger hotels in Khao Lak stay open during the rainy season — but not all. Some smaller boutique resorts close completely from July to October. Always check before booking whether your preferred hotel operates during the rainy season.
Tips for booking hotels in the rainy season:
- Large international hotels (JW Marriott, Le Méridien, Pullman) often have renovations during the rainy season — check whether pools and restaurants are open
- Book early for July/August despite low season — German-speaking summer holiday demand is still significant
- Ask specifically: "Is your pool open in July/August?" and "Are all restaurants operating?"
- Questions about a specific hotel — whether the pool is open, whether there are renovations? Ask us directly on WhatsApp — we're on the ground and we know.
