Khao Lak with Kids –
The 15 Best Activities for Families

Meet elephants, watch sea turtles, paddle through the mangroves at night and snorkel in crystal-clear water — Khao Lak is Thailand's ultimate family destination.

👨‍👦‍👦

As a father of three sons (15, 11 and 4 years old) who lives in Phuket and visits Khao Lak regularly with his family, this guide is written from real experience — not a guidebook. I know what thrills kids, what bores them, and what gives them the holiday memory they'll talk about for years.

If you're looking for a destination in Thailand that genuinely works for the whole family, Khao Lak is your answer. None of the noisy party-town chaos of Patong — instead: quiet wide beaches, lush jungle, friendly towns and experiences that amaze children of every age.

Khao Lak sits around 80 kilometres north of Phuket and is the ideal base for the Similan Islands, Khao Sok National Park and the unique river worlds of the region. Far quieter than Phuket — a huge advantage for families with young children.

Khao Lak Safari — Elephants, Bamboo & Sea Turtles

Best seller · Full day · Perfect for all family ages
Khao Lak Safari elephant experience bamboo rafting Khao Lak

A family moment at the Khao Lak Safari — elephant experience, no riding, just real contact © Go Travel Phuket

⭐ Best Seller 🐘 Elephants 🐢 Sea Turtles 🛶 Bamboo Rafting 👶 From age 0

If you only do one tour in Khao Lak, make it this one. The Khao Lak Safari is our most-booked family day, combining everything children want to experience in Thailand: elephant bathing (no riding!), bamboo rafting, the Turtle Conservation Centre, a waterfall, a temple and more — all in one perfectly organised day.

The centrepiece is the elephant bathing — the elephants are in the river, children help scrub them, wade in with them and feed them bananas. My three sons still talk about it months later. The bamboo rafting on a calm jungle river is relaxed enough for toddlers and exciting enough for teenagers.

Swim vests: For young children aged 0–3 we recommend bringing your own swim vests / swimming aids from home. For older children, life vests are provided on site.
Prices (approx.): Adults approx. 3,000 THB  |  Children (4–11 yrs) approx. 2,450 THB  |  Transfer by small-group minibus included

Little Amazon — Canoe Through the Mangrove Forest

Half-day · All ages · Available daily
Little Amazon canoe kayak mangrove river Khao Lak family tour Thailand

Paddling through the golden mangrove tunnelsof the Little Amazon near Khao Lak - one of Thailand's most magical river experiences © Go Travel Phuket

🌿 Nature 🛶 Canoe 🐦 Birds & monkeys 👶 From age 0

The Paknam River north of Khao Lak winds through an extraordinary mangrove area locals call the "Little Amazon". By canoe you glide through silent green tunnels of roots and branches. Water birds, monkeys and river monitors are regular companions.

This half-day programme combines the canoe trip with a visit to Takua Pa Old Town — one of the oldest Sino-Portuguese old towns in southern Thailand. Colourful colonial houses, small street kitchens and warm locals make it one of the most charming spots in the region.

🗓️

We especially recommend this tour on Sundays: the tour runs in the afternoon (12:30–17:00) because there is a local market in Takua Pa on Sunday afternoons — a wonderful extra for the whole family. On all other days the tour runs in the morning, which we recommend to avoid the midday heat.

Similan Islands — Snorkeling in Paradise

Full day · Seasonal (Nov–Apr) · Two options for families
Similan Islands snorkelling with kids from Khao Lak

🤿 Snorkeling ⭐ World-class reef 🐢 Sea turtles 🐠 Coral reef

The Similan Islands rank among the world's most beautiful snorkeling and diving destinations — crystal-clear water, turquoise bays, vibrant coral reefs. Khao Lak is the closest departure point, just ~60 km away. An absolute must for families with children aged 6–7 and above.

Special highlight: the Similan Islands are home to two resident sea turtles that are regularly spotted while snorkeling. For children, seeing a real sea turtle in the wild — not in a tank — is an unforgettable moment.

We offer two early bird options for families:

🚤 Option 1 – Speedboat (Early Bird): For children aged 6–7 and above. Fast, exciting crossing (~70 min), ideal for older children and teenagers. Maximum snorkeling experience.

🛥️ Option 2 – Speedcatamaran (Early Bird): For families with younger children (from approx. 2–3 years) or for guests prone to seasickness. The catamaran is noticeably calmer, wider and more stable — less swell, more comfort for little ones.
⚠️ Season note: The Similan Islands close from May to October. Plan your visit between November and April — book in advance as spaces are limited.

🐢 Sea turtles 🌱 Conservation 👶 From age 0 ❤️ Educational

The Turtle Conservation Centre near Khao Lak is one of the most moving experiences for families in all of Thailand. Injured sea turtles are nursed back to health, nesting sites are protected, and baby turtles are raised before being released into the sea. Included as part of the Khao Lak Safari Day — no separate booking needed.

💡

After the visit, almost all children ask whether they can adopt a turtle. Ask the staff on site — turtle sponsorships do exist!

Khao Sok National Park — Three Options for Families

🌴 Jungle 🚣 Canoe 🐘 Elephants 🌊 Cheow Lan Lake

Khao Sok is one of the oldest rainforests in the world — older than the Amazon. Just 60–70 km from Khao Lak, it offers families three distinct options:

Option A: Khao Sok Day Tour (from age 5)

Our Khao Sok Day Tour combines a canoe trip on the Sok River, an elephant experience (feeding and possible bathing in the river), a visit to a monkey temple and the Takua Pa market. Perfect for families with children from age 5. For children under 5, the Khao Lak Safari Day is the better fit.

Cheow Lan Lake Khao Sok National Park limestone cliffs family tour from Khao Lak Thailand

The breathtaking Cheow Lan Lake surrounded by limestone cliffs — Option B and C of our Khao Sok tours © Go Travel Phuket

Option B: Khao Sok Lake / Cheow Lan (from age 10)

Cheow Lan Lake — a vast reservoir surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs — is one of the most spectacular sights in Southeast Asia. This tour includes a jungle trek of approximately 1.5 hours and a drive of around 2 hours each way from Khao Lak. We therefore recommend it for older children and teenagers from age 10.

Option C: 2-Day Tour with Overnight (from age 5–6)

The ultimate family adventure: both programmes combined, with an overnight stay in a spectacular Treehouse in Khao Sok National Park (Rock & Treehouse Resort). Treehouse Resort, jungle sounds at night, monkings on your balcony in the morning — for children from about age 5–6, an adventure they will never forget.

🛶 Rafting 🌿 Nature 👶 From age 0

Gliding down a quiet jungle river on a traditional bamboo raft — wide, stable and guided by an experienced local. The current is gentle enough for toddlers, and at several points children and parents can jump in. It will get wet. Very wet. That's the whole point.

Important for toddlers (0–3 years): Please bring your own swim vests or swimming aids. For children aged 4 and above, life vests are available on site on request.
👕

Pack a change of clothes — the bamboo rafting is one of the wettest activities of the safari day. A dry set of clothes in the bag saves the afternoon.

Khao Lak Beaches — A Family Paradise on the Andaman Coast

Free · All ages · Every day
🏖️ Beach 👶 From age 0 🌊 Shallow water

Khao Lak's beaches are long, wide and barely crowded — ideal for families. Here's an overview of the best stretches:

  • Bang Niang Beach — Most popular family beach, calm water, shallow entry, restaurants along the edge.
  • Nang Thong Beach — Central beach with many nearby hotels, restaurants and shops.
  • Coconut Beach & White Sand Beach — Quiet, very natural beaches in the northern area — perfect for families seeking space.
  • Bangsak Beach — Far north, very popular with families, shallow water, beautiful nature. Home to popular resorts: Outrigger, Robinson, Mai Khao Lak, Graceland Khao Lak and Avani+.
Important: During monsoon season (May–October) strong rip currents can develop. Red flags mean no swimming. Check the flags every day.

🌙 Night 🦎 Night wildlife 😱 For the brave From age 6–7

The Night Safari is a truly unique experience — and definitely not for the faint-hearted. It starts around 6:00 PM as darkness falls over Khao Lak, beginning with a canoe trip on the Little Amazon after dark. With torches you spot snakes, night birds, slow lorises and other nocturnal creatures — a completely different world from the daytime.

This is followed by a jungle trek of approximately 1.5 hours behind Khao Lak, searching for nocturnal animals: spiders, snakes, geckos and amphibians. The guide lights up the undergrowth — and what he finds is regularly spectacular.

No dinner, no show. This is real nature, not a theme park. That's precisely what makes it so special.

Off-road vehicles on mud tracks and jungle trails, past rubbertree plantations and hills — the ATV adventure in Khao Lak is loud, muddy and absolutely hilarious. One of those excursions children talk about most when they get home. All clothing will be mud-covered afterwards. Proof it was fun.

🌊 White water rafting 🏎️ ATV 🧗 Zipline From age 10–12

The Anda Adventure in Song Praek National Park in Phang Nga combines three action highlights in a single day: white water rafting, ATV on off-road trails and zipline through the jungle. A full adrenalin day in stunning natural scenery.

This tour works best for children and teenagers from age 10–12 — younger and the physical demands and thrill factor are less well matched. For older children and teenagers it's simply the most exciting day of the holiday.

The Elephant Welfare Center is a genuinely special experience for families because it includes direct contact and real bathing — no riding, no shows, no chains. Children can feed the elephants up close, walk with them to the river and help with bathing. An intimate, heartfelt encounter that creates a deep bond between children and these magnificent animals.

The staff tell the story of each elephant — many were rescued from difficult situations — and for many families this is the most emotionally memorable experience of the entire holiday.

13

Waterfall Hikes — Jungle Cooling for the Family

Self-guided · From age 4 · Free entry
💧 Waterfall 🌿 Hiking Free

Around Khao Lak there are several accessible waterfalls ideal for a family outing. Nam Tok Ton Chong Fa in Lamru National Park is the best-known — a multi-tier waterfall with natural swimming pools. The walk takes around 30–40 minutes on marked trails. Beautifully cool, stunning, and free.

👟

Bring proper footwear — the trails can be wet and slippery. Flip-flops won't cut it.

14

Bang Niang Market — Street Food Discovery Tour

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturdayevenings · Free · All ages
🍜 Street food 🛍️ Night market 👶 From age 0

The Bang Niang Walking Street Market runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings and is one of the most charming markets in Khao Lak. Local stalls with freshly prepared Thai food, juices, crafts and souvenirs — all at very local prices.

Children love it: grilled bananas, mango with sticky rice, chicken skewers from the grill, sweets in every shape and colour. Come around 6:30pm, bring cash in small notes, and let the kids choose what they want to try. A relaxed, wonderful family evening.

Twilight Sea Canoe (from age 12, return ~10:30–11 PM)

The twilight programme is the evening, more magical version — and for older children the more intense experience. You paddle through caves and lagoons at dusk and after dark, including bioluminescent plankton that glows blue when you touch the water. Truly magical. The programme also includes a visit to James Bond Island and dinner on board. Return to hotel is around 10:30–11:00 PM — too late for younger children. We recommend Twilight from age 12 and above.

Practical Tips for Families in Khao Lak

🏨 Family-Friendly Hotels

Recommended for families with young children (0–5 years): The Sands Khao Lak, X10 Khao Lak, La Flora Resort, Robinson Khao Lak, Mai Khao Lak Beach Resort, Emerald Beach Resort and Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort — all with shallow pools, family-friendly service and beachfront locations.

Great for older children from age 6–7: Merlin Beach Resort, Graceland Khao Lak, JW Marriott Khao Lak, Avani+ Khao Lak, La Vela Khao Lak, Le Méridien and Pullman Khao Lak — larger resorts with more facilities for active families.

Not sure which hotel suits your family best? Message us — we're happy to advise.

🚐 Transport & Transfers

All our tours include hotel transfer within the Khao Lak area. For independent exploration we don't recommend motorbikes with children — traffic can be unpredictable. Better: a songthaew (local shared taxi) or a hire car with driver. We can arrange this for you.

☀️ Sun Protection

The UV index in Khao Lak from November to April is extremely high. Children burn faster than adults — even on overcast days. Use SPF 50+ waterproof sunscreen, reapply every 90 minutes, wear rash guards in the water. Quality sunscreen is very expensive in Thailand — bring it from home!

🦟 Mosquitoes & Insects

Mosquitoes are active at beach restaurants in the evening and in the jungle. Long sleeves for evening outings and a good repellent from 7-Eleven (Soffell or Sketolene) are sufficient. For our full guide on what to buy — and what to skip — at Thai 7-Elevens, check out our 7-Eleven Thailand Guide.

🏥 Health & Emergency

The nearest well-equipped hospital is Phang Nga Hospital (approx. 30 min) or Bangkok Hospital Phuket (approx. 90 min) for serious cases. Travel health insurance with assistance cover is absolutely essential for families in Thailand.

Frequently Asked Questions — Khao Lak with Kids

From what age is Khao Lak suitable for children?

Khao Lak is suitable for all age groups including babies and toddlers. Beaches, markets and the Little Amazon canoe tour work from age 0. Snorkelling trips and speedboats to the Similan we recommend from around age 6–7.

Which tour do you recommend most for families?

The Khao Lak Safari Day is our absolute bestseller for families — combining elephant bathing, bamboo rafting, the turtle centre and more in one perfectly organised day. For families with children aged 6+, a Similan Islands trip is additionally a must.

Are tours available in German?

Our tours are generally available with a German-speaking guide! The larger day tours — Khao Lak Safari, Similan Islands, Khao Sok, Twilight Sea Canoe and Andaman Sea Kayak — are conducted in German. Only certain tours such as ATV, Anda Adventure and the Night Safari are typically English-guided (German available on request — please specify when booking).

Can I combine several tours and get a discount?

No — we don't offer discounts as a general policy. This is intentional: we want to maintain the quality of our tours and ensure that prices are fair and equal for every guest. No guest pays more than another.

When is the best time to visit with a family?

December to February is ideal — perfect weather, all tours available, no monsoon rain. The Christmas period is very popular with European families — book early!
